I would like to purchase a wireless video camera for our horse trailer. I was wondering what everyone out there would recommend and roughly what they cost you. It would be good to have something that could easily be moved between two trailers. When the horses start rocking and rolling it would be nice to know why very quickly.

I've been looking into the same thing, and quite truthfully, you might be better with a wired system. I think you will get much beter picture quality and reliability. I wanted to go wireless too, until I found that there might be trouble with the length of my trailer and any metal that it has to transmit through. There was just a very nice system on ebay for 300.00 that fit right into your sun visor, and plugged into your cigarette lighter. The cigarette lighter powered both the monitor and camera. It was color, and had a speaker. The seller was unique634 and while the item ended today, he/she may relist one. It appears as though they sell barn and farm livestock montoring cameras as well. Just look around on ebay, but from what I've learned you get what you pay for as far as quality and reliability go. That's why I'm saving up for a nice one instead of getting a cheap hunk o junk....so I may not get one this year. But yah, I know what you mean about wondering what's goin' on back there when the trailer starts rockin'.

While I cannot say all wireless trailer cctv are not of good quality reception, I had the chance to view one while traviling with a friend (don't remember the brand) but there were some issues with reception at the monitor, maybe the antenna needed adjustment. I have a wireless system installed in my barn but decided to go with a wired system for my trailer (3 camera system) it has preformed with out any problems for the last 4 years. I think it was about $1200.00.

Thanks for the info! I'll have a look on Ebay as that is certainly a favorite haunt of mine. I have two trailers to use it on. One is a 2-horse with a dressing room and the other is my 28ft LQ. I'm not sure the wireless will work very well on the bigger trailer so perhaps I'll look into a wired system.

HI,
Just my 2 cents, but I would go with a wired system(no interference). We installed a system in our 3h Bison slant 3 years ago and still works great. My suggestions are get a ccd camera(not the cheaper cmos which are crap-IMHO). The camera has to have a low f.l.(focal length) which gives you a wider field of view, ours is 3.6mm, which when mounted in top right rear of trailer gives you a great view of all 3 stalls. It is a b/w Sony(color cameras have fewer lines of resolution-less sharp) with i/r(infra-red)diodes which enable us to see the horses in complete darkness.
The camera also has a 1/3" ccd(charged coupling device)compared to other cameras' 1/4" which results in brighter images.The camera was purchased new on eBay(gotta love eBay) for $90.00 and a used 5.6" LCD 12v monitor was had for $30 something dollars. Add $20-30 for some RCA cord and you can have an exceptionally sharp system for $150.00 or less(far cheaper than online units I've seen-some with inferior cmos cameras). Three years of use and we are extremely happy with its performance. It gives great peace of mind knowing how the horse(s) are doing after hitting a bad bump of feeling some major rocking going on in the back. Good Luck.

Huh, Copper, that sure looks like a nice wireless system at that website. It "says" it will transmit 1000feet and through steel or fiberglass of trailers. If that's true, that's pretty nice! I wonder if he has a return policy, I'd hate to spend that much and have such a feeble picture that I couldn't tell what was going on, but then again, I think there would be fewer problems with wiring as time went on. I just wish I could see one in action before I bought. Wireless would be so easy...if there was a guarantee that it would work WELL in my application.

I went shopping yesterday intending to buy the pieces for a wired system and instead bought a wireless camera from radio shack for 100 bucks. They said that if I didn't like it or it didn't work I could bring it back. Aside from the occasional blip in the picture, I'd say it does pretty well. We just backed the truck up by the trailer and held the camera where we wanted it. Picture came in nice & clear. I could do without the audio though.... The router plugs in, and you can view the picture on any tv or monitor. It's very simple. You can add up to 3 more cameras and alternate views. I'm not out much money, and I don't have to deal with any wires. I'll have to see how it does in transit, but the picture stayed clear all through my house which is solid brick with the old wood and plaster.

The camera will run off of a 9v. battery, but I'm not sure for how long. It came with a little battery attachment clip. We were just going to wire in a small power inverter that we had and plug it in like normal. We could then turn the power to the camera off/on with the switch on the inverter. The power inverter will be hooked to the 12v. wiring in the back. I'll see how that works. It has good enough picture for the money, I could tell if one of my horses was having a problem. It's not like watching HD TV on a giant plasma screen television, but you can tell what's going on in the horse compartment.

I cannot believe we still don't have this system on a trailer that sports granite and every other upgrade but Sam Elliott! I have been shopping for the right one.... I would hate a $1,200. price tag. Do I want to see what goes on back there? would it scare the begezzus out of me? Do I need automatic waterers too? Where does it end?
I had enough old ipads laying around i bought a mount for my truck to use it for navigation and i can view the horses too, as a plus people in cars following you can also view the horses if they know your wifi hotspot password.
way better/cheaper than most of the setups i saw on the internet for sale.

We have a three yr old 'Trailer Eyes' system in our 4Star 2+1 GN, and the monitor has given up twice on us. The camera still seems to be working and is wired into the trailer wiring for power. The monitor plugs into the truck outlet. There are two antennas, and while there is sometimes some static, it was working well enough. The monitor plugs into the truck outlet for power on that end. The manufacturer wants the same price (US) to repair it (ship the whole unit to the US from here in Canada) as we paid for it. By the time we do the $ exchange and shipping, we would be better off buying a whole new unit. Is there a way to use an iPad or is there another monitor out there that will work with my existing system and not bankrupt me?
The 'Rear View' brand was recommended to me, but I was quoted ~ $1100 US, uninstalled. It is a hard wired system. That's out of my price range. The old saying, you get what you pay for is probably true, but this system we got wasn't cheap and hasn't lasted very long.
I've seen a lot of units on eBay and Amazon for what seems to be a much better price than from the company websites. Are they worth buying? I'm not experienced with online shopping for electronics.

www.rearviewsafety.com I installed one of their wired camera systems in our Living Quarter horse trailer about 2 years ago and absolutely love it. 2 cameras in the horse area and 1 camera as a backup camera. They also have wireless systems but I'd go with a wired system.

Can i just say that Rear view was one of the systems i was looking at, and having never held their camera in my hand, from the specs and pictures it is the same camera I paid $45 for
