I know there had been some discussion from the "what's in your toolbox" thread, and I called AAA to get the scoop on what is and is NOT covered. After two days, they finally called me back. Horse trailers of any type are not covered...even if there are no horses in them. If it is not an RV/toyhauler/motorhome they will not cover it. If you have the RV coverage plan, they will change a tire on a dually. The gentleman I talked with seemed quite surprised that horse trailers were not covered. He told me that he went all the way to the top asking about horse trailers. Just be warned. Even if you got something in writing from someone stating that your horse trailer would be towed, I'd be leery. I think it might be quite circumstantial.
If my horses are involved, and I'm stranded on an interstate far from home and my transmission went out, I don't want someone's supposed promise being the only thing I have to depend on to get me and my horses & rig to safety. For RV's, AAA is wonderful. For horse trailers, I'd be wary. I'm so glad I found this out before a real problem happened. Just so y'all know...

Get USRider. They will ask if you have horses, is everything ok, will help find a place to keep your horse if you need to. I had heard a long time ago that AAA would't cover duallys. Guess they have added the RV thing.

I just subscribed to US rider, I'm waiting on my new member kit to get here. I told AAA that I got something else that would be of help to me since they were not very up front regarding what was and was NOT covered. I believe that they should put a clause in their brochure stating that trailers intended for livestock of any sort are not covered.

I'm going to dump AAA and sign up with US RIDER. I was on the AAA site today and found where it states horse trailers are not covered, That's some BULL. I specifically asked when I renewed. At least I found out b4 something happened.

I currently have AAA of michigan insurance on my trailer. My mom also had AAA of michigan insurance on her trailer when I totalled the truck pulling the trailer about 1000 miles from home. AAA payed to tow the trailer home, payed to have two tires fixed on the trailer and for the damage. I guess it probably depends on what state your in as to whether AAA will cover your trailer.

Hmmm...considering that I travel in several states, I don't want to risk it. I got my US rider kit in the mail today. It has some neat stickers, a key hider, and you get discounts at lots of cool horsey websites as well as hotels and car rental places. The brocures come in a nice little plastic-ish envelope perfect for your glovebox. It has a membership card, as well as a key ring card. Now that I've bought this, I will never break down. That seems to be the way of things, LOL!

I've had US Rider for about 4 years and only needed it once so far, but was sure glad I had it then. Other friends have needed it multiple times, all of us have had great experiences with it.
About 5 years ago, I was traveling with a friend when her truck broke down with 2 horses on the expressway. She had AAA, they of course wouldn't cover the trailer, so we unhitched, called her mom who drove the 20 miles to where we were, picked me up, drove me back to her house where my truck was, & I drove back to her. We hitched up and we were fine, but what if we'd been out of town?

OMG AAA keeps getting worse. I thought that when they said "fuel" they meant either gas or diesel. I'd be screwed in so many ways if I had a breakdown or ran out of diesel. I believe it also says that it won't help vehicles with 2 batteries. I don't think I'll regret switching to US rider. ....now I have to figure out if the savings on my auto insurance (through AAA) is worth having the roadside assistance plan. You save on your auto insurance if you purchase the roadside plan, which I did. Now I don't want it after getting to know it better.

US Rider, usrider.org, is the answer for anyone who pulls a horse trailer. We've had it for several years and when we called for everything from flat tire to truck burned out brakes in the Rockies, they've been 'Johnny-on-the-spot". When we burned out the trailer brakes they sent a big tow truck that hauled our rig with horses to a county fairgrounds and got us hooked up to electric and horses in pens. Then, they pulled to truck to a repair shop where they fixed the brakes. Couldn't have asked for more.
They will also arrange for a place to put your horses if that's needed.

US Rider is actually assigned to the driver not the vehicle. I have been with them since 2002. I can't say enough good things about them. I have 2 cars, 3 trucks and 4 trailers at present. My one account covers anything that I am driving, including rentals and loaners! Love it!

I was just about to get my daughter a AAA membership, but she drives a diesel VW... Is it worth it? Is it just that they won't bring you diesel fuel if you run out?

Just was on the AAA website for Southern Calif. and it states horse trailers will be towed but not horse transportation. We will be calling AAA Monday morning as I don't plan on leaving my horses on the side of the road. Many thanks for the thread.

I have SOCAL AAA and they did NOT cover my truck/trailer. They sent a truck that was too small (a rollaway that wasn't wide enough for the dually). The driver looked at my rig and said AAA wouldn't do anything for me. I called AAA again, they said I wouldn't be covered. Was a $550 tow! Next day, I signed up for US Rider.

Ok I called AAA in Southern Calif and spent over a half hour and 5 people trying to get an answer and the word is they WILL NOT move your trailer with the horses in it. I guess your to stand at the side of the road with them. So thank you for the information about US Rider. We Have signed on with this Org.

I have AAA Plus Rv and on more than one occasion they have transported my broken down truck & at that time BP w/DR trailer. The first time the local tow truck driver helped make horse arrangements. The second time I did not have a horse. If the horse trailer has a dressing room/LQ of any sort- primative or fancy- it's an RV.
However, USRider does sound better for "whole package" coverage. I may make the switch.

I also think it really depends on where you are if AAA would cover you. They sure wouldn't help us, so why take the chance - US Rider will cover your trailer and horse.

I e-mailed AAA and got a response from Jim Troy of Mid Adlantic AAA. He stated that they currently do not deliver diesel fuel. He did say they would tow your vehicle to a place where you could get it. Though I specifically asked about them towing rigs with livestock trailers involved, he did not address this question. At least they state it on the website!
