Hi,

I need to change the air-filter in my 2002 F-350 truck. (New truck to me) I had wanted to get a K&N filter but luckily an ex-mechanic told me in order to use the K & N filter, I would need to replace my air intake system with the K & N or the oil from the K & N air filter would "monkey" with a sensor. Now I am trying to decide what is the best quality for the money of the "replaceable" type air filters. Fram, Purolator, Wicks etc. I am not looking for the cheapest nor the most expensive...I want a good filter for a fair price. Thanks for any suggestions.

Use your stock air filter system and pick up the correct filter at your NAPA, Carquest, etc. store. Leave the aftermarket stuff for the "racers"!

I agree.  use the stock filter parts, they work fine.

Has anyone upgraded to an after market intake system? Have you noticed any performance or milage differences?

Bogus, K&N makes a drop in filter for your truck. There is not enough oil in it to " monkey" with anything. Try www.thedieselstop.com a Ford Super Duty forum.

Rich.

PS, garages will tell you anything. They don't want you to buy that last forever filter. Keeps them from bilking you for a 100% mark up item.

I use an amsoil airfilter on mine and noticed that the turbo spools up much quicker than a stock airfilter. Spend the extra to up grade. I am sure that K&N makes a replacement for your truck. If not, go with the amsoil filter.

There are other and better ways to improve the air intake for your truck for money, this is what I should have done.

I would not suggest a drop in K&N Filter for your truck. They let a lot of dirt past them, which can dust (ruin) your engine and your turbo. If you search the dieselstop link someone posted earlier, and do a search in the 7.3 forum for K&N, you'll get a lot of info on this. I would suggest leaving it stock or going with the Ford Heavy duty setup.

Thanks a heap for the suggestions. I am new to the whole diesel truck world and appreciate all of the comments. For right now I just went with a stock Wix filter. Will research before doing anything different. Thanks for the leads on other places to research too.

Remember.... more air in means more air out!  If you decide to modify your air intake system be prepared to modify your air out-take system (exhaust).  Ya can't take in more air than you can get rid of so doing one without the other is kinda a mute (sp) point.  And I too, have heard that the KN air filters let too many dust particles through them, they can dust your turbo if not your whole engine, as a matter of fact I have a KN filter still in the factory air box sitting on a shelf out in the shop right now.  I went to a Baldwin open air intake system and I like it just fine, but there again did some exhaust mods. along with it.  I'll bet for most anything that you'll be doing the stock equipment will be fine, my honest advice would be to keep that air filter that you just bought, throw out any ideas or thoughts about modifications and put your money towards that $3.50/gal. fuel that we all have the "priviledge" of dealing with!  Hope it helps some, talk to y'all later...
