Not long ago, there was a thread that had some info in it about this & of course, I can't find it now.  Someone had suggested a seasoning to give your horse daily that would help the horse to keep it's natural dark color in the summer.  My old memory can't remember who suggested it, but am thinking it was Paprika???  Can someone help me?  Thanks!

I'm never sure of the proper mixture, and don't like to mix my own horse minerals, ect.even though they may be safe ones.I feed Black as Knight by Chevel,or Omega Horseshine and this seems to do the best.Kept my black/white mare black for the Sept.show, and she was outside, all summer.

It is Paprika. Don't know how well it works, but some people thinks it does. It will be expensive unless you can get it in bulk. I have used the Cheval Gold As Sun and did not feel it worked, plus it is expensive.

Paprika was suggested to me on another forum and it has been working well.  I feed 1 tablespoon once a day and it has really helped my faded b/w appy.  He's not as black as he would be if confined to the barn all day, but he is not "liver" anymore.  I didn't start him on it until the end of April when he was already really faded and I can see a difference.  I've been buying the bulk containers at Sams Club for about $4 and they last about a month.  I tried the black as night (which has paprika) but it was to expensive that way.   +- $30 a month from Valley Vet.

Flax seed oil will also do the same.

Terri,do you just add the paprika to his feed and nothing else? I know that the Black as Knight product does say it has seaweed, flax and some kind of chopped hay,and it says "spices" on the label.Maybe paprika??

I just add it to my geldings sweet feed.  He wasn't to happy with it at first, but now licks his feed pan clean.  I have a empty bucket of black as night (its almost 2 yrs old) and it has paprika listed as an ingredient.

Thanks for the replies!  I was thinking it was you, Terri, that had mentioned it before.  Our horses are on flax & it definitely helps w/them keeping a shiney, not so faded coat.  But someone had recently asked me if there was something else you could give them.

I feed my colt ground flax seed (about 1 cup a day) and use sunscreen on him...the sunscreen gets applied to his coat about once a week or so (bottle says only required every 8 days) and applied to his nose about every 2 days (because  otherwise it burns when rinses it off in the water)...active ingredient  in the sunscreen is sunflower.....it smells good too...and he seems to like it...he stands for it to be sprayed on his nose and then licks it off....he is super slick and shiny....

Where are y'all getting your flax see oil and ground flax seeds?  And what sunscreen are you using (name?)?  Also, is anyone feeding wheat germ oil anymore or Clovite?

To help with the dry skin of my mare, I am feeding her the triple crown rice bran oil plus.  It has the flax seed oil in it.   I haven't been able to find anything else locally that compares to it with keeping the skin and coat healthy.  It is EXPENSIVE though.   I think it is $34 on the web site, my feed store sells it for $38 but since they started ordering it just for me I figure I can give them the extra $4.  I would also recomend the triple crown sr.  My old girl was on the verge of being put down because she couldn't hold her weight (in S. Tx)on any of the other feeds we tried when I found the TC sr.  She didn't loose any weight this winter (in NM, much colder here) and is acting much happier/healthier.

Heres the link for it.  http://www.triplecrownfeed.com/rice-bran-oil-plus.php

I purchased whole flax seed in bulk from a local health food store (they had to order a bag as most people buy very small amounts for salads and to put on the their cereal and what not)....a 25# bag cost me about $30 and he only eats a cup, mebbe a cup and a half a day...it will easily last him 6 months...I bought a coffee grinder ($20) from walmart and grind it fresh every day (it only takes about 10 seconds to do...literally)...I keep the entire bag in the fridge since the seeds can go rancid if they get too much warmth/moisture...it also helps to retain their freshness....you can grind it in bulk if you like, but the longer the seeds sit ground, the more of the beneficial properties they loose (its also almost prohibitively expensive to buy ground...a 2# bag of ground seed was $35)

I originally started feeding him the flax when I read that there was suggestion that the additional fatty acids helped with cullicoides sensitivity...he had it somethin awful...he stayed thouroughly coated in fly spray...which helped...but he was still covered in hundreds of whelps...I interviened before he started rubbing himself to death...within two weeks of starting the flax nearly all of his bumps were gone and he only gets an occassionaly bump now and again...I am a HUGE fan of flax for this reason alone...the fact that it keeps him slick and shiney is an added bonus...

I'll have to check on the name of the sunscreen when I get home....

I have been feeding flax to my horses now for about a year and a half.  They all have the most beautiful coats that they have ever had in their lives.  They get 1/2 a cup a day each.  You can find ground, stabilized flax from www.omegafields.com for $65.00 for a 50 pound bag.  Shipping is free to most states except CA, OR, WA, AZ - maybe a couple more, but those are off the top of my head.  They are an excellent company to do business with and are highly rated by Horse Journal and Johnny Lyon's magazine.

I feed soybean oil pressed from the beans we grow. Its been great stuff, so much so, I have been selling it on Ebay as well as locally, people are coming back for more. Puts on a terrific shine and keep the color rich( I have a chestnut and a bay gelding) I also keep them inside during the day and night unless they are not worked, then they go out at night.Keeping them clean in also big for me, after every work out, they get a bath and sprayed with coat conditioner. I know they say soap will dry out the coat but it hasn't. If anything, they shine up. If they roll, they get rinsed.

Yes, they will roll again the next time they are turned out. So i rinse them again before putting them back in for the day. The price you pay to keep them clean.

Yes, we grow soybeans in Mi, been doing it for years.

The sunscreen is "healthy haircare products for horses - sunscreen"

Ive noticed since my colt has been on flax seed, he is a lot easier to keep clean as well.....the mud and crud doesnt seem to stick in his hair as much....

I didn't realize the growing season was long enough in Michigan for them.

Here we use rice bran to feed our horses, and it is also high in omegas.
