In early fall we and some friends will be traveling to the Black Hills for a couple weeks. Any suggestions where there would be a good stop over point on our way there? We are traveling from the Springfield, MO area and since we have never ventured to that area before have no idea where to stop as a half way point. We are thinking that we do not want to drive it straight through as that is a very long time for the horses to stand on the trailer. Any ideas on where to stop would be appreciated. We will be staying at one camp and have booked our spots, but were debating on moving around and maybe staying somewhere else. Any ideas or thoughts on other camping spots would be great. We want to cram as much as we can into our stay, since we may not get back there again...who knows. Any input would be helpful. Thanks

Which way are you going? If going thru Nebraska we stayed at Lexington at the Horse Motel andPuppy shoppe. They are just off the interstate and have stalls, pens and hookups. If you are going up 29 there is a place called Union Grove state park in Beresford, SD. It's between Sioux City and Sioux Falls. Has several pens and hookups. We've been to the hills 4 times and we liked the riding and campsites at Broken Arrow in Custer the best. Where are you staying?

We haven't really decided which way would be the best route as of yet. Since you have been there four times, which route did you like to drive? Easiest on horse and driver? We chose Elkhaven, based on reviews both on the internet and also from people we met last year in Kentucky and Illinois and some other people we've met, now based on an earlier post this same site, now we aren't so sure? At any rate we will try it, but instead of spending all our time there, we thought maybe packing up and going to another site or maybe two. Might as well experience as much as we can. Hence, the request for additional sites. Thanks

If going through Nebraska, you might consider taking Hwy 2 through the Sandhills. You can take Interstate 80 to Grand Island or Kearney and then head north to catch that highway. I believe it's mostly 65mph. It does slow you down going through some small towns but can be a nice change of pace from the Interstate traffic.
As for stopping over, there is a Cabelas east of Kearney that has a couple round corrals available for their customers to use. There's also a Cabelas in Sidney if you decide to take the Interstate further west. I over-nighted there in June with the horses, parking next to the corrals and sleeping in the trailer. There was a faucet and hose right next to those corrals.
Just before you cross into South Dakota, near Crawford, NE, is Fort Robinson. They have kept many of the original buildings and rent those out, along with stalls in the horse barns. They also have camping with plug-ins available. Primitive camping at Soldier Creek Wilderness is just west of the Fort and has a water pump and corrals. There are some marked trails to ride or just blaze your own. They have buffalo and Texas longhorn herds, plus you can come across mule deer, pronghorn antelope and bighorn sheep.

I live in SE Kansas and went to the Black Hills this sumer for the second time. We took hwy 71 to hwy 29 then hwy 2 then on interstate 80 and went north at Ogallala overnighting in Lexington using the Horse Hotel and Puppy shoppe also. Hwy 2 goes right through Lincoln so lots of traffic and it slows you down. Coming home we came interstate 90 through SD and then south on 29 without stopping. It took about 15 hours either way but liked 90 best because didn't have as much traffic on 90 as 80 such as semis. We will probably go 29 to 90 next year. We also stayed at Broken Arrow camp and did like it also. Let me know how you liked Elkhaven.

It is probably a little easier driving up 29 to 90 across S Dakota but the scenery is alot better thru Nebraska. I don't think there is 2 weeks riding at Elk Haven although there is some good riding there. Might want to stay several days there and then either go to Broken Arrow or even to Fort Robinson. We went from MO through SD and overnighted at Cabelas in Mitchell, SD. They have several pens and water. If the pens are full you could tie your horses to the trailer. There is just about unlimited parking. Everything is around in the back.
We stayed at Elk Haven and found it was nice (request a spot in the shade!) but there was not enough riding for a lengthy stay.

We have found the fairgrounds excellent places to stop over. There are lots of them, the facilities are more than adequate, and the price is right(many are free). Here are links to fairgrounds in both SD and Nebraska. Some require a phone call to open them, but most are open 24/7/365.
