Hi new here on this board. I may have to get a new truck. I don't really want to but, trucks just don't last forever. Any pros or cons on either the dodge cummins or the Duramax? Any advice is welcome.

I had an 04' Dodge Dually 4x4 Cummins, Had to sell it cause it was to tall to pull my fifth wheel camper. It did fine with the large horse trailer(14' shortwall LQ), but I sold it and bought a 4' dressing room trailer. I had it hooked to the 4' once and it was to tall for it also. I bought a 06' GMC with a Duramax, I don't think the Duramax has the power that the Dodge had, it has plenty for what I'm pulling with it, but I don't have to worry about the tailgate getting tore off and to me that is more important.

Thanks for the replys. I Still feel real strong for the Cummins. Got to test drive both. They both definately have their good and bad points. The Duramax has the nice ride and extra room. The Cummins definately felt like it had more power, and the exhaust filter wasn't a big ugly thing like what is on the Duramax. Plus they are $10,000 less money than the Duamax. It may however who gives me the most for my trade in.

I went with the DMAX 07 in the 'classic' body style. I really honestly dont care for the new body style and all the new emissions made me weary of becoming a 'test dummy'. The 07 classic has the LBZ motor w/out all that new crap on it and I couldnt be happier power wise.
I cant speak bad about the dodges, I think they're a great truck w/ a standard trans for the older body style. The newer one again has all the new stuff AND a new tranny so it made me weary.
If dodge would have made that damn megacab w/ a long bed I might be driving a standard trans cummins TODAY. Even though i liked the interior of my GMC MUCH BETTER that mega cab would have put me in it. Dodge, are you listening... Heck, BIG 3 ARE YOU LISTENING???? MEGACAB long bed, you have a buyer waiting!!!!!!! LOL
These are just one of MANY forums online about both trucks. Keep in mind that these forums are not always positive, alot of these guys dont post when they have a good day w/ their truck, they post when they have a problem. This will give you an idea of the direction you want to go. :)

Hi, I have an 02 and an 07 Duramax (both 2500hd). I have also pulled with an 03 Cummings (2500HD, no exhaust brake). The main difference for me between the two trucks is the Allison Transmission in the Duramax. Also, both the 02 and 07 DMax had significantly more power pulling loaded up hills than the 03 Cummings. The Cummings did have a tighter turning radius and the steering felt more positive, but for pulling live loads there is nothing else that compares to the DMax's Allison Transmission. If all you need is a "truck" then I have no qualms recommending the D'Max and the 07 should have plenty of power out of the box. If you need more pulling power, stability, etc, check out the FL60's.

I drive a Ford but given a choice I would go with the cummins.Later in life if you want to play around get a Allison thanny and bolt it to the cummins.

I have an 02 Duramax/Allison and I LOVE it! We haul 3 horses in a GN with mid-tack and ya don't even know you're pulling anything! I feel absolutely safe in it. Good luck and have fun shopping!!!!

I have a new Duramax and my neighbor just bought the new 2007 dodge cummins. His truck is a lot taller than my chevy, so much, that he now has had to adjust his trailer for the height difference. Also compare the drive shafts. Chevy's is Way bigger. He has a nice truck, don't get me wrong. It's just not for me.

There is no comparison. I own a 2007 Dodge and have extensively driven a 2007 Chevy for work. Save at least $10,000 and get the Cummins... If you're looking at the 5.9 Cummins get the 6 speed manual. Any automatic mated to the 5.9 Cummins is junk. If you're looking at the new 6.7 Cummins feel free to look at the automatic... its a new unit and I've heard nothing but good things about it!
The Cummins has more low end power than either of the other two engines and will last a lot longer by design. An inline six has fewer moving parts and revs a lot lower.
I also perfer the new Dodge interior to anything Ford or GM makes. It is simpler and laid out much better.
I know I always love getting in my Dodge to drive home after driving the Chevy for work all day.

Hi there, I just went through the same process and ended up with the 5.9, six speed manual Dodge Cummins and love it. LOTS of power and good speed/braking power with the manual transmission. I looked at the new 07's with the auto transmission but decided a manual transmission would be better for towing.

CUMMINS!!!! Is there really any other choice? lol
HWBar: I really hate seeing you trade your truck for such an easy fix. These Dodges do sit up high. There are two rear block spacers under the rear leafs, and when they are removed (can be done easily) it makes the truck sit perfectly. Then if needed, could always add airbags if it sits too low hooked.

Wait a minute, let me unerstand this. I give $35K for a truck, then I have to wrench on it to pull a trailer? I DON'T THINK SO. I like this D-Max more every day, so long Dodge. I really don't miss it at all.

Whoa buddy, I was just stating it can be fixed. My trailers sit just fine on my truck. I never said you didn't like the d-max. Just thought I might try to help.

I'm not mad, I think they should build the truck to tow a trailer(not just a bumper pull). Ford had the same problem in the 99-00 trucks, they fixed it. I just wish Dodge would do the same. As far as the power I have said it before I still think the Dodge wins. Now when you get inside the cab GM is an easy winner, and the paint was just junk on the Dodge. The Dura-max is stout and the Allison is very nice. The Dodge had the tough guy look(I liked that, but I'm getting over it).

Have a '02 Duramax 2500 HD and a '05 Kodiak Duramax. Haven't had any problems with either of them and they get the crap towed out of them. Neighbor has a '06 Dodge 1 ton which he likes a lot but, he's hating the gas mileage. He's getting less than 10 mpg towing a small (26') RV trailer. The '02 2500 Duramax gets 18 mpg towing, or not. The Kodiak gets 13 mpg not towing and 11 mpg towing a 15,000 lb. LQ. Tough call, they're both nice trucks but, I wouldn't trade my Duramax for anything (unless someone gave me a FL).

I would take the Duramax any day of the week.. I have an 06 and that is when the power went up to 360hp and 650lbs of torque(Stock).. Ford or Dodge don't match.. Plus with the 6 speed Allison Automatic there is no stopping it.. Not loaded I can get 20mpg with a Crew Cab 2500HD 4WD.. Plus you if u want an automatic. Dodges suck.. Known to many people getting they tranny's replaced on a Dodge with only 150K or so.. They may have changed them this year but who wants to be the one that tries out something new and it turns out to be crap.. Duramax was crap when it first came out but now the bugs are long gone.
