A lot of slant load trailers have the type of latch with the spring loaded pin that sticks out horizontally from the end of the divider. It latches into a hole in the butt-side wall. When the divider is open, during loading, it seems that the pin could be a hazard. I imagine it poking a horse in the guts right in front of the hind quarter. Has anybody ever heard of this happening? Or is it highly unlikely, if not impossible?

An image of the type of latch I am talking about is attached.

when it comes to a horse getting hurt nothing is impossible, but i would call this situation highly unlikely.  if the divider is open/out of the way and technically the pin is spring loaded and will give if pushed in,  i dont see it being a problem.

My divider has a hole drilled in the top with a drop pin and the butt end telescopes back inside just a few inches so that the spring/pin is well out of the way. When I want to let my horse have alot of room I just pull the pin and bungee cord the front divider to the back divider. I have a velcro tail wrap that I wrap around the spring/pin section so he can not get caught on it.

I would be more concerned about being struck by lighting.

mguthrie, your method seems to ensure that the horse won't be poked by the pin, but seems to defeat the purpose of having a FAST and SIMPLE slam latch.

Ha ha.  You are probably right.

A experienced horsey person once told me we could protect them in a padded stall so they don't get hurt! But they would probably eat the padding and colic!
