I'm converting the front of my goose neck to a LQ. I've done the foam board insulation and fir strips and am ready to put up wall covering. I looked at several new LQ trailers and they all use a foam backed textured vinyl wall covering ,some add bead board for a wainscoating . I like the look of this, and it would be really easy to do ... but I checked the price of the foam backed vinyl and its like $12 to $15 a yard(24" x 54") plus the cost of the 1/4" plywood behind it.

Has anyone done this factory style wall covering? and is there a cheaper sourse for the materials.

   Thanks

You might try the upholstery section of a fabric store if there is one anywhere near you. JoAnn and Hancock fabrics both carry such. Might also check with someone who re-upholsters cars to see if they have a better source.

Years ago I did some panels for a guy to install in his truck. I used cheap paneling, 1/2" foam and canvas material (from Walmart).  He wanted a natural look.  You could sew a pattern into the material then glue (3M 77 spray) the foam to the wood and trim excess then glue the material to the foam tuck to the back and glue. Install it and finish off with a section of rope wood trim moulding to hold everything in place.

Yah I was thinking of spray gluing it down to the wood and trimmin it out with something at the seams and edges, the rope wood moulding would look good, I like your idea, but I still like the vinyl for its ease of cleaning. I checked the fabric stores and some of them have a pretty good selection but still $$$$$. I also saw some on e bay

Fabric is sold by the yard and it is 54" wide, not 24"x54", and $12 - $15 a yard is still cheaper than buying less expensive fabric, the cost of the foam, the cost of the adhesive and the agrevation to glue the fabric to the foam. I don't know the dimension of your LQ, but if you would take the cost of the padded vinyl, less the cost of the type of paneling you would put up, the result would be the extra cost of installing the covering that you wanted. There is no easy way to get the look you want without spending some money.

Yep, the fabric bolts are 54" wide ,It is sold by the sq yard( I guess I should qualify that for you) 24" x 54" is the same as 36"x36"....still a square yard,1296 sq inches if you do the math. Not actually looking for this to be cost free. I'm really trying to do some equitable planning. If you have actual installation experience with these materials that you can share, or a good place to source the materials...That would be great! Thats why I'm posting. Do you?

I have been buying canvas, vinyl, and upholstery fabric for years, and it has always been sold by the running yard x 54", I thought this was an industry standard, I didn't know it changes with different parts of the US.

Every fabric store I've been to doesn't measure the width, they measure by length.  3 yards of material is 9 feet long.

Your right, most fabric stores do sell by the lineal yard per 54" bolt. Thats why I said I should have qualified that for you. Foam backed vinyl by the lineal yard is on average $23.00 per yard, you can check www.garysupholstry.com for that... By the sq yard it is around $15.00 or .011 per sq inch, calculated either way. That settled...You'll find it sold by the sq yard on E bay , Craigs list, some upholstry shops reselling rems. Even some fabric stores. You'll also find it sold by the lineal foot on E bay Craigs list some upholstry shops etc. However you cut the jib the cost is the same. Sooooo... how about some constructive feedback, not incumbered with semantics,Please.

I did this just a few months ago... I used foil backed 1" insulation where I could, and foil backed bubble wrap insulation in the curved places near the roof. Next I used cedar furring strips and then I finished with wood like paneling (beadboard was too heavy & expensive). It came out great! I used the leftover cdear to make some open shelves. The trailer looks and smells wonderful. I insulated the floor and gooseneck and covered those with plywood... 1/4" in the gooseneck and 1/2" on the floor. Both are covered with carpet paddding and then indoor/outdoor carpet. It is warm, dry, quiet and very comfortable.

Hi, congratulations for doing your own conversion.  My husband and I just finished ours.  I didn't do the walls like you are talking about, however I did use this technique for the insets in my cabinet doors, my walk in door and I have used it to make a decorate a headboard and matching dresser.  However, I suggest using quilt batting instead of foam.  Cheaper and easier to work with and won't disintigrate in heat and dry conditions.  Use the spray adhesive to stick it to the vinyl or fabric and then stick that to the the backer board material you choose.  On my walk-in door I backed it with very thin masonite.  It is lighter and thinner than plywood.   Here is a link to an on line fabric and vinyl source.  http://www.fabricresource.com/  They have a store in my area and have quality goods.  You can get some awesome faux leathers and suedes that would be great for about $10 per liner yard.   Here is a link to some photos of our conversion.

May you can get some ideas.  By the way, the same link that someone else already sent you was also my inspiration.  I wouldn't have had the courage to start without his photos and instructions.  Good luck.

Hello Terri,

I ordered it from these people:  http://www.countryrv.org/  They used to do conversions and are very familiar with what you need.  They also put together all the plumbing parts I needed for it and my husband installed it.  They get it from Jazz Sales, but Jazz only sells wholesale.  You can go to the Jazz website, though, and look at it.
