Are rosemary or juniper bushes toxic to horses?  We want to plant something along the outside of the horse pen.  We are looking at these because they are evergreen and survives in the desert with out a lot of water.

If you want to plant them outside the fence for decor you'll be okay. horses may eat them in times of hunger, but not enough to have ill effects

Juniper no, I'd guess Rosemary would be safe too.  Ask your vet.

A great source for info on toxic plants is your local ag extension office, they can give you all sorts of advice and help for free/cheap.

Thanks y'all. I want the rosemary, my husband wanted the juniper. I guess I'll win this time. We wanted roses, but I know my horses will eat those. We had 3 at our last place. The previous owner planted them right against the fence and they grew through it and were always eaten off right up to the chainlink fence, and as far down as the horses could reach over the fence.
The guy at the feed store has a couple of rosemarys that are 5ft tall mounds. Thats what I want.

Many ornamental plants are quite toxic to horses and some can kill a full grown horse with just a few bites! (Japanese Yew) Check with the ag. ext. agent and your vet.

RIDE ON!

Juniper's are a member of the coniferous trees and they are toxic to horses. But horses don't normally consume the leaves of these plants
