This is the first day since Dec22 that I haven't had to break ice from the horse's tank. The last 3 weeks it got as thick as 8"

Now its time to see just how deep the mud will get.  We have had highs in the high 20s last week.  It is supposed to get in the high 60s by the end of this next week.  I can only imagine how deep the mud will get.  At least we aren't busting ice.  I'm sure it will test the limit of the 4x4 to get back and check the calves though.

Hey Hank.......how about buying a tank heater?  It would save you some sweat, aggravation and stress out there in the tundra chopping ice.

It is plenty cold here too in NW Pennsylvania and I love my tank heater.

I spent the first 25 years of my life in MN and you're right ...... it is damn cold there

Then I spent 4 years in Minot ND ...... nothing prepared me for that....wind chill like you wouldn't believe and "winter" takes up 6 months all my itself.

Buy that tank heater Hank.....you may be fat and need exercise but your horses will be happy and drink more water.

We went 30 or so days with out getting above freezing.  So I broke ice every day. But at worst it was only 2" thick.

Even when it was below zero out.

My measurement of how bad a winter is, has always been "How big is the ice pile that I broke out of the stock tank"

Some stock tanks are just not with in a reasonable distance to run an extenstion cord.

don't laugh but I haul 20 gal. of hot water from my bathtub for the horses every morning.   2 of the young ones are very mouthy and I'm paranoid about them playing w/ a tank heater and getting electrocuted or something...
