Since our stations have switched to the ULSD fuel, my '97 F250 Powerstroke has begun to die when coasting or moving at "idle speed". Could this have something to do with the fuel or is this a sign of some other trouble???

change your fuel filter. MANY times problems like this are an early warning to change the filter. Quick, relatively cheap , especially considering the alternatives ! Gluck(I've a 96 F350 Powerstroke, so I empathise)

sounds to be the same problem that most people have with this year of Ford. I have the same thing, we replace the "cam sensor" and everything worked fine. I know of 5 others in my town that have gone through these $60 parts, at least 2 of them. It's just something the seems to happen with the "97 3/4ton diesels. The dealership will try to tell ya something different, but that's what it alway is. Easy to replace on your own, but my husband worked on these truck, tow trucks, so he knows the '97 3/4 tons like the back of his hand, knows the common prob. He worked for Chevy for years, but good ole' wifey here loves the Fords! he is pretty smart on mechanical stuff! Good Luck!

I'll agree with cowpony, Cam position Sensor (CPS). Was $85.00 from the International dealer when mine went. I carry a spare with me cause it's guaranteed to happen again. You can also pick them up at NAPA. I bought mine off of Ebay.
Takes a 10mm socket, 3" extension, ratchet, and a flat blade scewdriver and about 20 minutes. Located at the front of the engine next to the water pump on the passenger side. Can get to it from under the truck.

Thanks guys. We change the fuel filter regularly so I wouldn't think that would be the problem...but I will check it. I will definitely look into the CPS thing. Thanks again for the info!
