I'm bringing a new horse into my herd next week.  This horse grew up with one of my horses for the first three and a half years of their lives.  They are both now 7 years old.  They were fed side by side, played together before, during and after weaning. They were never seperated until we moved.  I was just wondering, seeing as how horses NEVER forget the bad experiences that happens to them, do you think they remember old pasture friends?

All horses have a very distinct smell,odor, aroma about them and the first thing a horse does is smell the other horse. We have 4 horses that reside here all the time as we are their humans and take care of them.  All 4 of them have a very distinct aroma from sweet, to not so sweet.  My oldest mare has the most pleasant smell about her all the time and the first thing my wife does when she goes to the barn is run her fingers through my mares mane, give her big hug and take a long sniff.

I refuse to respond to that question because I always get accused of being too sensitive!

However, I am asking this question for a reason..........I've never put a new horse in my herd that had been previously raised with one of my horses. (well, at least to my knowledge anyway) So I'm just trying to get some insight here...........in this particular situation there could be a possible change of venue.

My arabian fillie loves to smell your hair.she will come up to a new person and smell their hair.They ask if she bites and I reply no she just wants to smell.

When I trim her feet I don't tie her she just stands and will put her nose on my back and just relax untill I finish her.They like to smell everyone.

True they each have a smell of their own.
