I have a 26 year old walking horse mare and my neighbor a 26 year old Arab.He fed the Legends old horse fed and I the Nutrena.In the last month BOTH our old horses completely STOPPED eating it.Period.They turn they noses and just WON"T.Both will eat mill feed or what ever with no issues.But mine won't even eat if I mix some in a 12% feed of corn,oats alfalfa with a LITTLE sweet on it.Any one else run into this.They BOTH were eating it just fine and then stopped.

As a matter of fact, I got that same reaction after about a month of my 32 year old gelding being on it. Liked it just fine at first. Went back to feeding Moorman's Senior Glo. Still have the remaining old timer (29) on it and will not switch again. Nothing against the feed, just didn't work for me.

Are they eating hay alright or drinking water? Sounds strange that two different horses would stop eating two different types of grain. What kind of storage do you keep your grain in?

They eat everthing else ok.Water intake is fine.Won't eat it fresh out of the sack.Both ate it fine for several months.I've tried differant sacks of it several weeks apart.Started feeding to my yearlings to get rid of it.Its NOT cheap feed by any means.$10 something per fifty.Nutrena Life Designs senior and my neighbor was feeding the same deal but Legends.As I mentioned if mixed with other feed picks through and leaves the senior feed or won't touch it at all.Now a mill feed they eat with gusto.

I dont know either..... I have a 23yo Mustang and a 28yo TWH and they both love Life Design Senior and are doing well on it. Been using it for about a year now. In fact I switched my other horses to the Nutrina Safechoice recently.

This topic kind of came up on a different post (Feed Tags...Do You Read Them). Any ingredient that is listed as "Products" is a way for grain manufacturers to substitute the cheapest roughage, grain, etc. - this could explain why two different horses would turn up their noses at the same time - both grain manufacturers could have (and probably did) switch to a cheaper alternative in their grain. I tried to access their websites for an ingredient list, but they do not provide those lists. Since you are in GA, I would recommend Triple Crown Senior or Seminole Senior - both are Class A feeds.

Interesting thought about the grain products.Talking to a feed dealer this A.M. he mentioned that a issue has been brought up about the high fat content causing a reaction.The body shuts down its need in a adverse way.He said it was brought up in a seminar he went to.Obvisiously I'm not the only one who has noticed this.I need a phone number to Nutrena or Southern States.Their web sites only offer e/mail!

don't know if this applies, but my qt mare who liked her Purina Ultium high fat feed suddenly wouldn't eat it. realized it was a different bag and smelled it, sure enough it smelled off. checked the date and it was OLD. fat oxidizes, smells and tastes different and she sure wouldn't eat it. had to mix the new, fresh Ultium with sweet feed for her to start eating it again. hope this helps.

Two differant feeds(neighbor and I)bought at differant times and tried other lots of it.I'm currently feeding the rest of the old horse feed to OTHERS to use it up with no issues.I did talk to a Southern States feed rep this A.M.whom says they have had issues with HIGH fat diets in general.He is passing this on to higher ups.Waiting on a Nutrena rep to call me now to discuss tis with Nutrena.Southern States web site has their main phone number on the site etc.Nutrena DOES NOT.I called SEVERAL Nutrena prefered dealers this a.m. whom had NO CLUE to how to get in touch with Nutrena or a rep.Finally the LAST prefered dealer gave me a phone number.

My mare and neighbors gelding have been off it for a couple weeks easily.I tried mixing some in her grain last night and NOPE won't touch it still.Neighbor stated his old horse on XTN and he's eating that.Mine is on general population 12% grain feed and eating it good as long as no Life designs senior in it.

Its more then a open bag.The feed I have left over is not a issue.Trying to understand WHY? Talked to Nutrena rep yesterday finally. giving the old mare probiasis(spelling)and trying something.it MAY be a old horse thing like US when we get old with changes in weather,grass etc.

Periodically my 35 year old gelding stops eating his Senior feed. So I feed him another brand but eventually he goes back to his old brand. I guess he likes variety! Last year this happened in the Spring and by Fall he was ready to switch back.

Been told its not variety.Its minor gut upset in old horses.Change of seasons,grass niblets etc.Thats why I'm trying the probais.The Southern states site HAD a phone number and got a feed rep quickly.The Nutrena site had NO phone number and took me 72 hours to get in touch with a rep.But the Nutrena rep I think hit the nail on head about old horses having minor upsets with change of seasons and new grass etc.Thats why two old horses,differant feed brands living 1/4 mile or so away from each other quit the senior feeds at the same time.

UPDATE.Well tried several things including a Purina feed/probais etc.Won't eat it.It looks and smells like the others.Eats a mill feed sweet feed just fine.So its the same feed all the others get.May not be as good for her but it costs me 1/2 of the SENIOR feeds do.Neighbors old Arab still won't touch it eaither.He's on a regular grain feed now also.

Interesting info hounddog, Thanks. My two old folks are still eating it OK, and we usually cut back on Senior feed now that the pasture is getting green again. So maybe we can make another yr.

Do you and your neighbor use the same feed store? Maybe the feed was contaminated somewhere in storage or shipping. Mold, bugs all that fun stuff. I found a bag of Nutrena sr. feed that had mold but because of the strong molasses smell you couldn't smell the mold.
