Subject: Tying up??

My friends horse is HYPP and is 4 yrs. old. She uses him mainly for trail riding. Here in the last 5 months he starts tying up even if he is just walking. Is this because of his breeding? Any suggestions? Will this be a continual thing and just get worse? Thank you

Does he eat really high protein feed and stand in a stall all day?

I've never seen a case where breeding had to do with tying up but maybe he could have something else?

Is he really tying up? Tying up and HYPP are 2 different things. Tying up is excess of lactic acid. HYPP attack is a potassium problem.

Has the owner thought about having a veterinarian get involved in this horse's diagnosis?

Could be a vitamin defiency as well, best to ask these questions to the more knowledgeable.

What are you calling tying-up? Sweating, muscle twitches, shaking, hard breathing. What is the heart rate and respiratory rate during this time. If so, sounds like your horse could be having "Periodic Paralysis" Have you been feeding alfalfa, or other feeds that are high in potassium. You should be getting a vet and talk about control procedures and emergency options. Ask him to show you how to do a tracheostomy.
