I'm purchasing a 3 horse slant gooseneck w/ living quarters that I'm having built by Hawk trailer. Normal axle size is 6000lb. with a GVWR of 12000lbs. I had another unit like the one I'm buying, weighed by the factory. It weighed 9740lbs. empty. With 3 horses, tac, water tank filled, hay, etc., the trailer could weigh 14000lbs. or more. I know about 25% of the trailer weight is transferred to the truck. Are the 6000lb. axles heavy enough, or should I have the 7200lb. axles put on? Please let me know what you think ASAP. I'm ordering trailer Monday or Tuesday. Thank you!!

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I think you should give the greatest weight to the opinion of the factory that is building this for you. There is probably adequate margin with the 6,000 lb axles, if that is what they usually build that trailer with. I would ask them for an in depth explanation of why they offer the 7,200 and if/why they would be more suitable for your planned use than the 6,000.
If you're not dealing with someone that can answer this to your satisfaction you probably need to request someone who can. I'd hold off on the ordering schedule until I felt I had a knowledgeable factory rep on my side.
Then you'd have THEM to go back at instead of US if the ride turns out to be too harsh/bouncy/whatever_else (-:
Yep, you'd think you could go to 16,000 with the 6,000s if 25% is on the truck (-:

Hi, I am ordering a Hawk also. I am getting the 6000.lb axles. My trailer is a 2 horse straight load with side ramp, LQ,30' long. I was not told or informed by my dealer that I needed anything more heavy duty. The thought did cross my mind. Let me know what your dealer told you please ! Thankx, T

My dealer and one of the owners at Hawk told me that the 6000lb. axles would be fine. They both said I would not need the 7200lb. axles. I hope this helps!
