Is it an optical illusion, or do you have to remove your tailgate, if you buy a trailer with the generator mounted on the front drop wall, down low? It sure LOOKS like you wouldn't be able to hook up....that the tailgate would bump into the box.

I don't know about removing the tailgate; but I do know that having a generator mounted in that position is very dangerous for allowing fumes to enter your trailer thru windows in the neck of the trailer. Several years ago, a father found both his wife and daughter affixiated from having the generator running below the neck of the trailer. Fumes had entered the trailer thru the windows, and killed them both. This is exactly why generators are mounted towards the rear of the trailer. Even with portable units.............DO NOT RUN THEM UNDER THE GOOSENECK !!

Any fumes entering the LQ is a bad thing, especially if it is gasoline powered. There are some other threads concerning this. I have a front mount generator on out GN LQ and no issues hitching up with the tailgate down and can even walk between the two. However, it may depend how your trailer is built. If someone lost there lives because of CO, tragic but every LQ should have a CO detector! Ours is hardwired into the trailer. Older and less expensive models may not have this feature. Have ran out LP fueled generator and never set off the alarm. The only time the alarm has sounded we were transporting the trailer home using another truck- the dual exhaust exited directly in back. Stopped to refuel and alarm was sounding. Opened LQ and smelled the fumes. No horses on-board. But made me realize it is better to have the exhaust dump to the right side of the truck which ours does, thankfully. When hauling- would at least keep fumes away from head side of trailer/horses. Generators in back or towards the back have a tendency to spook horses more from what we've observed at shows. Some are mounted on top but soon manufacturers won't be doing that anymore either. So, is there a perfect spot? No. Is there a safe way to do it? Yes. Choose wisely.

Thank you for your response and information.My previous trailer had the gen on the roof, and I loved it, so I'm curious about your statement that gens won't be on the roof anymore. Can you expand on that?Thx,

Tailgate opens just fine.FYI, DO NOT BUY A TRAILER WITH THE GENERATOR MOUNTED LIKE THAT! Unless you do some major mods to keep flumes from entering the LQ! We ordered a new trailer that was made like this along with a slide out that nearly killed us from sucking flumes under the slide into the LQ. Took about 3 time before we figured out why we would wake up with a major headache each time.

One more thing,I did not put it there,the manufacturer did. Every toy hauler I have ever seen that has a gen set has it there because they cant put the "box" and genny at the rear like on other trailers and MH's.

There are several manufacturers that have mounted them there, in RVIA or TRA approved installations. I know those I've seen had fairly long exhaust pipes that routed exhaust back under and out the side of the trailer away from any openings.
And- any trailer around a generator needs a working CO detector. That detector close to the floor in many trailers, is for LP only, not CO. If in doubt, go buy a new CO detector and install it. And if yours is older than about 10 years old, replace it.

From what I was told and after months of research the trailers like we had was certified without generators! Generators was added at a later time and from what I have seen the generators have been moved on the new models.
