Well, seems that my 7 year old converter is shot. Does anyone have any tips in replacing the converter to ward off the outrageous rates of hiring "the man"? Certainly it can't be THAT difficult. Right??

Some of the earlier trailers have stand alone converters and a separate power panel, whilst most newer models include a combination converter/power distribution panel with a/c breakers and dc fuses. These are a little more labour intensive to replace than the stand alone units, because of the additional wiring changes.

Both types are remove and replace items, with little modifications necessary to address in the installation. You will have to determine what type you have, and the model type which will give you the rating. An older unit can be upgraded with modern battery maintenance, instead of the old type of simple battery chargers.

There are various sources on the Internet, and you can usually match the ratings and physical sizes to closely match your present installation. It can be a DIY project if you have a basic a/c and d/c electrical knowledge.

I had a 04 4 star with outlaw conversion. Don't remember the exact type but it went underneath the fuse panel. All this to say if I can do it, anyone can do it.took about 30 mins and I ordered it I online and saved about about $150.

Even though your converter has both AC breakers and DC fuses, the charger/converter portion is in a separate section of the panel, usually behind the fuses. Couple years ago mine failed and I was able to remove the charger portion with out disconnecting the AC breakers.

N2 a few suggestions. Take pictures of everything before, during and after a well documented project will pay dividends. Buy the same model so you don't have to modify existing wiring. The most important is to disconnect the shoreline, batteries and any other power source.jg
