I'm ready to install a GN hitch in my f 250,8'box. The instructions say to mount it so that the ball is centered over the rear axle. My bil (who has had a few 5th wheels) tells me whatever I do be sure the ball is slightly ahead of the axle c/l by an inch.He is saying that if it at or behind the c/l, pulling the trailer will slightly unload the front axle, resulting in adverse handeling responces. I am useing 10 bolt reese rails and the reese plate thatpis to them. The ball on the plate is offset about 4",meaning that the c/l of the ball and axle can be altered by reverseing it. My thinking is that I should mount the rails so that the ball will be either 1" or 5" ahead of the axle, depending on how it is pinned in place. Oppinions please?

Depends on the weight of the trailer.  A very heavy trailer could over load your axles ... front or rear depending on truck & trailer.  Also... how much clearance do you have under the bed?  The top of the differential could hit the bottom of the ball hitch if you're unlucky.  Be aware of the depth of the hardware.

Related but not answering your question.  Don't do what my friend did when installing the GN hitch....he was drilling the holes in the truck bed for the hitch and heard a POP.  That was his spare tire mounted under the truck bed.

I like your 1 & 5" options. That's what I would do. Typically, a B&W looks to be 2-3" in front of the axle.
