What is a good brand for rear mount camera on your trailer and a good monitor for inside the cab? What something that will work while driving down the road too.

Any of the in-dash products that come with new trucks or the after-market monitors like the Edge CTS will display any camera you install. But they turn off when you shift out of reverse. A safety feature to help keep your eyes on the road and not looking at a small screen.

There are work arounds that you can buy to disable the safety feature. But they cost as much as buying a separate monitor.

If your truck does not have a monitor already.  You can find many choices on Ebay for sale. A 7" to 9" monitor is what most buy.  Your decision will be more of where can I easily mount it and not have it in the way for my normal driving. You may also want to look at monitors with multiple camera inputs or install a switch that will let you activate a 2nd or 3rd camera. ( i.e. back up camera for reverse, in stall camera to watch horses during drive and a 3rd camera in truck bed to help with hooking up Gooseneck.)

As far as cameras.  the cheaper ones will be 1/4" cmos based.  Better quality will usually step in size to a 1/3" and jump from the CMOS to CCD based.  Look at the waterproof rating, Do they offer IR for night time use, How many LUX ( ability to see at night) Higher number is better here. Also look at the resolution.

There are lots of choice, Just read the details and find what is a good camera at a good price.

So basically these cameras are used only for backing up and not when you are going down the road to see if someone is directly behind you.

Well...you can use it for that...but proper mirror checks will tell you someone is moving into your blind spot(s)

The FACTORY back up camera monitors will only turn on when you are in reverse.

The Auto manufactures are constrained by the safety laws.

The after market monitor are not tied into your transmission and have no idea when you are in reverse, So they will work any time you want.

So it all depends if you want to bring your camera inputs into a built in monitor that Ford, GM or Dodge has already installed in your dash. Or if you want to Velcro a second monitor to your dash. If you have an older truck that doesn't have the built in monitor, You are going to be buying a monitor anyway, So it will be an after market and not have the safety restrictions.

For me, I have the built in monitor in the dash and have already added a Edge Insight CTS to monitor engine vitals. Adding a 3rd monitor seems over kill.

I have a Pioneer avic-5 radio. I've seen them at Best Buy. I have a switch on my truck that Sportchassis installed for up to 4 cameras. The radio has a setting where you can pic full or half screen map & half screen camera. Then you just tell the switch which camera you want to see. I usually run with my screen on full camera and use my Garmin GPS.
