Went to Idle Nook horse camp at Y City, AR last weekend. Had some really good rides and the campground was really nice. The owners were very nice and helpful. Also the the karaoke on Friday & Saturday night was fun. Look forward to going back and riding more of the trails.

I had a few freinds there last week. They arrived on the 6th and left on the 12th. They spoke highly of the trails and camp also. Because of thier suggestion we are planning a trip there with the rest of group. This is nice for us as it is only about a 7 hour ride from home.

I think everyone besides us was from LA, it was probably your friends that pulled out Friday morning, then another big group from LA that was mostly Jack's relatives pulled in Friday afternoon. The flys and bees were really bad in camp, but once you were on the trails there wasn't any bugs. Have you ever been to Land between the lakes in KY? We are thinking about heading there next spring.

Did you like 34 Ranch? We drove up and checked out some campgrounds last summer when it was too hot to do anything else. We sorta of liked 34 Ranch but it looked like you had to ride quite aways on their property before you hit the trails. Also looked at High Knob, it was mostly full of permanent campers and looked like everyone else pretty much parked out in the sun.

Z71~I've been to Land Between the Lakes. IMO, the trails were pretty flat except for under the power lines, and then only like a small valley. Maybe we just failed to hit the tough trails if they do exist. One thing for sure, it was one of the cleanest and well groomed campground I've been to. We also liked the little restaurant. But it's always fun to try a new destination. I just prefer trails more like you find down in Shawnee.

34 Ranch camp ground was nothing to write home about but normally if you give me electricity and water with secure pens, I am happy. I do not know where the pics on their web site where taken but they didn't look like what we saw but it was not bad. We had some good riding but caught rain for two days. Some of the trails are fairly challenging. We ended up hiring a guide that helped quite a bit to make up for lost time ( we felt the fees were reasonable $15.00 per person for the day). One thing we liked was that we were the only ones in camp during the week. This is a pretty long haul from the house but it was worth the trip.

So I am in the midst of finalizing our 2013 ride schedule as we always pick one place new to visit. This year we would like to head back to Arkansas. Been to Buffalo River area several times and would like to check out the eastern side of the Ouachitas where Idle Nook is located. I have a few questions:
- We have gaited horses so typically travel 5-8 MPH, is there enough riding for a week? We typically do 12-18 miles a day. - What are the horse facilities like? Pens, stall, wash rack etc? -Sites level and shady, or are level blocks needed ( I realize this is a hilly area, just need to be prepared) - Are the roads getting to camp scary? Steele Creek going into Buffalo River leaves my heart in my throat! LOL!

I would say there would be enough trails for a week, I know they were adding more trails last fall when we were there. The camp sites are level and easy to get into, the stalls are very nice and roomy. There was a lot of shade. It is just off the highway and easy to get into. We had a good time and plan on going back to check out more of the trails.

If you are considering Shawnee look at Hayes. They have several permenant campers,but there is shade for the camp sites and stalls. You can ride several different directions from camp and they also have a trailer for rent so you can haul to other trail heads. We really enjoy Hayes but some advice if you want to go in Oct. it is probably already to late,but it never hurts to try.
