Due to divorce and life changes, I've downsized to a bumper pull and recently had to sell my F-250. I still have a trailer but no tow vehicle. My parents offered me their 1997 GMC Yukon which has a tow package but nothing else. My trailer is a 2H Hart Thoroughbred BP with a dressing room, and I have no idea what it weighs (it never mattered with my old truck). Can I safely pull this trailer with the Yukon (one horse) or do I need to consider downsizing to a smaller trailer with no dressing room. I assume I should get a WDH? Any other considerations? Or should I not pull horses with this vehicle at all?

I've always had goosenecks and pulled with nothing smaller than a 3/4 ton so pulling with a 1/2 ton SUV is scaring the crap out of me, just seeking some guidance/advice. Thanks!

not MY HORSES! Yes, using a wdh will help to put the load on the frame and not on the end of the bumper. Is your Yukon a long wheel base? Some of them are just a 1/2 ton truck with a back end, and would work just fine I would think. BUT...stopping is also to be considered, and I don't trust the older brakes to do an adequate job.

Yes it can pull a 2 horse BP, assuming it has the TOW PACKAGE and Yes you should get a WDH and finally you should have both the trailer and vehicles brakes checked over...

I think if you haul with a 1/2 ton, after using a 3/4 ton, YOU will notice a difference and will not be happy. It seems that most who haul with 1/2 tons, and say they have no issues, and it does fine, have often never hauled with more truck, so they have little to compare to. (yes, a handfull have been able to compare, but most I have met, have never used anything more)

I bet you would find yourself uncomfortable every time you went some place

The Yukon with a factory tow package will be adequate to tow a 2 horse trailer, if your trailer has brakes then a compatible in-cab brake control is needed if your Yukon does not have one.

Yeah... I had a Tahoe that did great job pulling Merhow Alum w/ steel frame, straight load 2H BP w/ dressing room. Usually 2 horses to local shows, hills no prob. It's when I started loading it up for camping ( hay, firewood , water etc) that I eventually burned the the tranny :( Good luck and have fun!

Update

I am trying to get a hold of the Twister trailer folks. I just live up the road from Fort Scott. I really like thier work. For a dodge update. I have the Longhorn dually. They have really done thier homework. Out of the gate I am beating my mpg's by 1mpg so far. Ford ran a 4:10 and this truck runs a 3:73. Pulling power is great. I did test out the EB and that is the best invention since sliced bread. The 6 speed auto is also great. Crusing down the road at 65mph the rpm's seem a little low though. I think this machine is a pulling machine with 650lb of torque. Wonder how the 800 HO will do. Have read alot about people doing the egr and dpf deletes however I think I will leave this stock for now. Hope this info helps.
