Will a Ford 5.8L/351 pull my 2004 Exiss 4 horse with 3 1/2' short wall?  It is 4700lbs empty.  The truck is a 3/4 ton.  Or do I need the 460 or the 7.3?  Also, what is the difference in the Turbo and Non Turbo Diesels?

Wouldn't see why not... May not be a race car but it will get it down the road.

I have the exact same trailer and I would say that a 351 3/4 ton would pull it just fine,  you might get a little worse gas milage but then again who really gets "good" milage when they are pullin a trailer.  As for me, I pull it with a 3/4 ton Chevy Duramax Diesel.

the main differenct the way that I understand it is the Turbo is pushing a lot more air in and creating a hotter burn and thus more power.

Here is the towing chart...you did NOT state what your rear end ratio is...

I don't know what the rear end is geared like.  Just looking at the truck online and wanted to know of that engine would pull it.  I did pull it with a 5.4 the other day, a friends truck.  It pulled it, but lost power going up hills and such and that was only with one horse in it.  So I was just checking.  I will see what the gears are if I am going to actually look at it.

I hate truck shopping! LOL!  I got a guy all mad at me as I offered him what his truck KBB at...he is asking $2700 over KBB.  I was like the bank won't loan for over KBB and that is the price for Excellant condition.  Gotta love people! LOL!

A non turbo diesel is a dog to get going- long, slow acceleration to get up to speed. I'm not sure you can even buy a non turbo diesel truck anymore, but maybe I am wrong. I even have a VW Jetta TDI and that thing can fly with the best of them. My ex husband had a non turbo diesel VW Rabblt back in the day and he always said until you got up to cruising speed it was time to get off the highway! ( And that was on long runs!)

I pulled a 4 horse Hart with a 2 1/2 short wall with a 3/4 regular cab Dodge with a 360. It was a little doggie on the hills if fully loaded, but it stopped great. The only other issue was gas mileage. I swear I was getting less than 10 mpg. I knew where every gas station was that I could get into with the trailer between home and the show grounds we frequented.

People do seem to think their heavy duty trucks are worth a mint. I am always amazed at what prices a heavy duty diesel with 200K will bring.

1st, I would check the weight of the trailer.  Sounds too light for a 4 horse trailer.  The 00 SS300 Exiss with a 4'SW we bought new in 2000 was around 6500lbs empty then loaded 4 horse we are talking around the 10-k lbs range.

Yes the truck will pull the trailer but will be under powered on any hills.  The early 93 and older are non-turbos, 93 and early 94's are IDI turbo trucks the 94.5 (5speed in 94) and up Fords are all electrionc engines (POWERSTROKES).

Inmy opinion if you are set on a Ford I would find any of the Ford Diesels turbo or non turbo.  The IDI trucks are much cheaper to repair and work on compaire to the Powerstroke trucks are however the Powerstroke will have alittle more power.  The non turbo trucksare pretty much bullet proof enigne, yes they can be alittel slow on take off but plenty of power going down the road.

Last but not least anything price over KBB is a joke!  Most of mine are price around kbb trade in value not retail.

Thanks for the help guys.  The title on the trailer says it weighs 4670lbs.  I have not taken it to be weighed...as I have no truck right now! LOL!

I was thinking of the 460 or the 7.3 for an engine and a F250 should stop it just fine.  All the brakes work.

I have found a 7.3 that is in my price range, is a nice truck, the only thing that concerns me is it is not 4x4.  I have always had that.  I don't use it much, mainly to put round bales out...but I also had a dually before....so that was the main reason it needed 4x4.  I guess I could try it and if I get stuck, I will have to pay my hay guy extra to bring over the round bales for me.  He only lives 2 miles from me, he wouldn't have a problem with that.

Thanks again for all your help.

If  the 4x2 is an extended cab of any kind, it can get stuck in wet grass. They are too heavy on the front end.  I had one and hated it for that reaon.

I had an Exiss like this that was a 3 horse though. My truck at the time was a 5.7L gas, 350, '91 chevy. The hills were murder. Even with just one horse and my camping gear.I had to stay in the slow lane with all the big-rigs on the hills. This truck ran really good and was in excellent shape too. I ended up buying a different truck. I now have an '02 Duramax diesel with 4wd that I bought used with only 45,000 miles on it. I would never go without 4wd. I cannot tell you how many times I have had to use it in my own front yard! Slippery grass, gravel, icy roads, snow. Don't go without the 4wd. You will regret it I am sure of it. Keep looking. You will find your truck- it is out there.

I finally found a truck!  I am so happy!

1997 Ford F250 HD, 7.3 Power Stroke, 4x4, 208,000 miles, one owner, excellant condition!!  $5000!  I think I did good!

I got it home last night and it drove perfect!  Just took it up to my auto shop and all the mechanics were loving it.  Then I made some money off from it! LOL!  The guy I bought it from put the visor in the bed of the truck.  I didn't want it, but he didn't either.  One of the mechanics gave me $40 for it! LOL!

Now to get a gooseneck plate in it and I am good to go!  It already has a brake controler!!!

Should definatly not have a problem pulling my trailer now!!

Congrats! You've just about described my truck to a T, except I only have a little over 100K on mine (original owner). I just love that truck! I hope you have as great of an experience with it as I have with mine.
