Hello!I will be traveling this fall with a livingquarters horse trailer and no horses. I will be in Oklahomea, Texas, Colorado and Montana. This trip will be a recreational sightseeing trip with a little hunting and fishing thrown in. Kind of looking for a great new place to live also!Where can a person park a truck and trailer overnight? RV Park? State Park? Fairgrounds? Sale Barn? Side Street? Etc.What are the typical costs associated?

EHC, All of the above. I've done RV park with no horses, auction yard, NAPA auto parts parking lot, fairgrounds, shopping mall parking lot, truck stop parking lot. I suppose if I got really desparate and was near one I'd do the Wallmart thing. If you are totally self contained and can "primitive camp", I'd opt for something free or cheap. The RV parks, if they'll take you will be both pricey for the full service and full of PEOPLE. State parks usually aren't very cheap either. I like the fair grounds best. Quiet and usually priced right. Depending on the size, they will or will not have electrical. In Texas, I think that I'd go for the state parks. They are nice and there are lots of them. In Colorado and Montana, if you are planning on a little hunting and fishing, then plan on camping in the National Forest. Do some research and find the campsites. Call and talk to the ranger station and get more details. I like the horse camps best. Depending on the camp, sometimes if you don't have horses, you can still stay in the horse camp if it isn't full. One word of caution, because most of these camps will be in the mountains, big trailers sometimes won't work so well. Talk to the ranger station just to double check if you are OK for length. I'm not sure what route you are going to take. Going west out of MO, my first stop is Concordia, Kansas (rodeo/fairground), then Cheyenne, WY (fairground, depending on how far west you go, then Evanston, WY (fairground). If you are headed up to 90 straightaway, I would try to hit Fort Robinson (north west corner of Nebraska. It's pretty cool even if you don't have horses.

Seen trailers enroute to Wellington, Fl. from the New England states over nighting at our local 24 hour Walgreen pharmacy...!! They got about everything you would need other than horse feed and fuel. Rocky Mount, N.C. is about half way between New York and Miami....

Truck stops, Kmart and Walmart is what we usually use. We've also stopped at a Ihop that had truck parking. We've also stayed at some rest stops but not all allow overnignt parking.

In most of the west you can primative camp in dispersed camping. Meaning just pull off the road.
This applies to Forest Service, BLM and state trust lands. I rarely stay in any kind of formal campsite.
Utah is 72-74% public lands, So there is a lot of this state that you can just pull off and park. Other states will have more private ownership. And Private usually means, "not on my property".
Fairgrounds are also an excellent suggestion. I've stayed at the Cortez Colorado and Laramie Wyoming fairgrounds when traveling.
Also Cabelas often has horse corrals, I suspect thatwouldn't be a big deal if they saw your horse trailer parked next to the corrals,.

You could also check here. http://www.horseandmuletrails.com/ If your planning on staying in an RV park call ahead. I have a friend that works at a RV park and they have lots of restrictions on what they can allow.

I too have traveled without the horses & used all of the suggestions mentioned. I have stayed at some really neat RV campgrounds and was always welcome there too. Have fun!

EHC - if you know where you might be in OK, I would be glad to help with suggestions. Most of the Walmarts around the OKC area do not allow overnight camping. But we have lots of great horse camps across the state.

Several of the city parks in my area (SE Kansas) allow you to stay overnight. Some even have hookups for a nominal fee. The catch is you have to find city hall during business hours to have them turned on.

I recently made a 2 day trip to MN to pick up a horse. On my way there hauling empty I stopped at a walmart..I simply pulled in near a semi truck and parked it there. Managed to go in buy some food..it was late,dark and I was tired.Ate something and just went to bed. Didn't need power or water. Next morning was on the road and nobody from walmart ever said a word. While in MN I stayed overnight at a KOA as this time I wanted power and water! the people at KOA never asked about the trailer just took my 30 bucks and directed me to a pull in/out site. Perfect.I have parked overnight at rest areas ( I didn't have a horse in the trailer) that had semi trucks parked and I would consider stopping at truck stops too. if you don't need hook ups then there is no reason not to ( well ok the noise of a heavily used truck stop might be a problem)
