I'm upgrading to a GN. I need to have the ball installed in my truck bed and have gotten a lot of interesting quotes. What is the best place to go to? Horse trailer dealer? RV place? Or hitch specialist? What should I expect to pay for the hitch, install kit and the labor for install? What hitches are the best? What should I avoid? I have a limited budget and don't want to get ripped off. I also need a safe hitch that will hold up.

From memory I think they run about 500ish installed. I bought a ball that drops down in and that was a waste of money. It seems like it is always rusty and too hard to get it to drop down. Go to someplace reputable

Best thing for a limited budget is DIY and a B+W hitch.  Top of line equipment, low cost, and no chance of rip-off.  Two hours of your time the first time, half of that the next time you do it.  Took me about 4 hours the first time, but I'm a slow thinker.

In 2005 I had mine installed for about $500. I took the truck to an RV place. I was impressed with the service manager's knowledge and the fact he was gracious about answering my many questions.

I had originally scheduled it with a different place. But when I brought up some potential concerns they weren't taken seriously.

My mistake - I didn't have the RV place install a plug for the brake cord in the truck bed. Just thought I'd use the plug by the bumper hitch receiver. On the trip home from picking the trailer up the cord got hooked over the receiver on a sharp turn and was jerked into two pieces.

Here I was 200 miles from home in a strange city with no trailer brakes or lights. It all worked out but as soon as I got home I got the receptacle installed in the truck bed. The RV place did this also.

I had mine put in 2 yrs ago by a horse trailer dealer.  There were several options for installation but i ended up paying around $300 and that included th lights in the bed.  I had to go the chapest route, which is the old way (the slab under the bed) but am happy with it.

Most of the B&W turnover balls will cost you around $500 installed.  $350 if you do it yourself.

They work great.

I also put a pop-up ball in my trk, about 7 yrs  ago and they require alot of attention. The guy that put it in, at a trk accessory shop, told me it would be.  I think that it a has served me well, but I dont mind going under the trk to lube it. It was only 350, but that was 7 yrs ago and I believe that they have made a new version of this hitch. From talking to others, if you are going to go with a commercial hitch and not one homemade at a local fabrication shop, I would go with a B&W.
