i built a nice large run-in in a 20 acre pasture. i usually do NOT use it for feeding in unless the weather is bad (as in rainy.) this pasture is for my old retirees (3 of them.) the problem is that the sheltered area has become their bathroom and i really don't want to have to scoop poop out of it if there is a way to make them change this fairly new habit.
does anyone have any suggestions for making horses change their favorite poop spot? maybe if i feed them further away from the run in or if i tried feeding them IN it everyday? i had wanted to set a round bale in it during the winter...any idea if that would make matters better or worse?
seems like i read something on this topic in some magazine but i am not organized enough to keep all my horse mags in one place. thanks for any suggestions.

Really-and good luck with that. Mine have all three decided to use one stall to poop in. I can clean it twice daily and it is still full by the next day. 20 acres and they come up to use the stalls. I could cheerfully kill them sometimes!

I had luck with putting new bedding in a spot where you wanted them to poop, then putting some old bedding there too. How many horses love to come take a pee and poop on fresh bedding!

I wish I could teach my girls to poop in ONE spot.. Eve is pretty good about it .. only a few piles scattered, but Tamber is a holy terror.. she poops pretty much wherever her behind happens to be pointing and can poop (or pee) on (her) command immediately when she is either just loaded in the trailer or tied in the cross ties in the barn.. She is the only horse I've ever had who will walk across 90 acres of pasture and drop a pile in the barn aisle as soon as she is tied in crossties.

i have been feeding in one area of the run-in shelter and that actually has seemed to help a little bit. there is less poop in the area where that one bucket is, so i may try feeding everyone in there. of course, i have 2 little rescue minis that are still leaving their little poops in that area, maybe in protest because they can't reach those feed buckets.

I don't have an answer either. I've had a super neat pooper and a super messy one with the rest falling in between. My mares have been the worst. I swore one swung around like on a turntable to do her business and then totally stomped it. I was so glad when she sold. My neatnik was a gelding that not only pooped outside, but always in the same spot.
