I have a chance to get a very well bred purebred Arabian weanling or yearling colt out of a very well bred stallion. Not sure why they give their colts away for free other than they want the fillies only for future broodmares and don't want to mess with the sale of the colts.
But there is one thing that is holding my decision back. They had a few of the weanlings get strangles this year. They are better but I am very leary of getting one and bringing it back to my other two horses. The yearlings aren't pastured anywhere near the weanlings so they can't touch noses across the fence. Saw both the weanlings and the yearlings and they looked pretty healthy... But am still undecided as to what to do...Do I take a chance and get one of the free colts or pass it up this year and try again next year??? Plan to call my vet and see what he thinks....But what do you all think.....The stallion that they are out of was a Brazilian National Champion Stallion and Region 12 champion stallion, very good credentials in the arabian breed...

Just inoculate yours before he gets there and then do him either before he gets to your place if possible or after.I use the up the nostril strangles vaccine.I do ALL mine if going to a strange place or trainers etc.No need for a vet other then to purchase it. It squirts up a nostril then a week later another follow up.No big deal. LOTS of FREE horses of all ages all over on Craig's list etc. if you like him go get him.

My wife has been big into Arabs for years and years.Whats the stallions name and lines and the mares? Is the paper work in order? Oh and don't be scared of the live up the nostril strangles vaccine.Its not like the old inject able stuff.It won't cause strangles or any issues.I have used it many times.Some folks have got this idea it can cause strangles and such.

Something sounds hinky to me, good bloodlines and free don't mix unless you have genetic disorders in the mix. Has the stallion been tested against SCID?

Thanks for all the good input...Have been going over my hay supply for the winter and I think I am going to pass on the colt, but might call someone I know to see if he would be interested in it. Thought about taking the colt then turning him over to my friend after I give him all the details.
The stallion's name is Fausto who is a Magnum Psyche son who goes back to Padron and on the dam side goes back to Almaden. Supposedly these people only want the fillies and don't want to mess with the sale of colts unless they are of superb show and stallion quality...

I'm seeing ads on free ones of many breeds.Have come across several Arab and Qtr weanling/yearlings on Craigs list at very little money or free.Not tons of them but some if you read and comb the ads daily.I got TWO from folks that bred to my Driftwood horse and when they were yearlings. One family changed lifestyles and didn't want the filly,moved into a neighborhood etc. and another said not enough time and gave me a colt.I did not want eaiher of them but went and got them anyhow.I sold the colt that same week and just started the red roan filly a few weeks ago and will have her in ads in a short while for sale.No telling what would have happened to them if I had not gone and got them.

Hey, Hounddog, what have you got for sale as far as yearlings go? I'm looking for something that I can start and train for team penning/sorting/general cattle work. I know the stallion you speak of. Personally, I don't care for the MP lines, pretty yes but thats about all. You are speaking of Oak ridge Arabians? Halter breeders. There isn't much of a market for anything but a top of the line halter horse so I can understand why they give them away but I do wish that if that is what the combo produced,they would just cull out that mare.

Ya' know, I could never understand the seperate judging of "halter" built and "performance" built horses. What's pretty? I don't think calf knees, offset cannons, club feet, cow hocks etc. are pretty. Yet, I have seen regional and national winning halter horses with these faults. Why? A functional, correct horse with a brain cell is pretty.

Gone, that's the reason AQHA has created the performance halter class. Plus our performance horses couldn't get the needed halter points for titles, etc. IMHO 'halter' is the biggest joke of a class, well that and the poles class, I mean the new trail...

When I was in the hospital a friend of mine took our Driftwood stallion to his place to help out.He with out telling us started showing him in halter at two different saddle clubs.He was high point open halter by the end of the show season in BOTH clubs.Some of classes were 15 plus horses and most look liked Hereford bulls.But the Judges apparently liked our WORKING line of horse.

At a saddle club you'll find what AQHA now calls performance halter. I like to watch AQHA halter classes and take bets with my friends about which horses will be DQ'd based on soundness issues. When will they start training horses not to limp like other breeds do...opps did I let out the secret? LOL!

If they want to judge a horse for "trail," they need to be out on an actual trail with creeks, hills, rocks, deer running in front of you, and all of the weird noises from unseen critters!

OMG! My husband and I do that too! We've changed it a bit though. We pick the most lame appearing horses, and decide it if will be first, second or third! The worse they move, the better they place.
When I sent my gelding out for training, I told the trainer if he came back moving like a lame WP horse, I wouldn't pay her. She laughed and said she refuses to train that movement. She's also a judge, and refuses to place it, and she said she takes a lot of BS from disgruntled competitors. She says if they don't like it, don't book her.

And more of them would judge like that, the industry could straighten itself out in a few generations of horses. Hope there's room for us all on that one soapbox.

My number one pet peeve with the horse industry is a WP horse that is anything but a pleasure to ride, and even worse to watch. Nose on the ground, dragging hindquarters, no impulsion, and a canter that is more like a one-cylinder engine gasping for fuel. What are the judges thinking???

And after loping like that for show after show......Then you can get hock injections to try and keep them sound. Silly I think. AQHA was suppose to change all that. I'm still waiting.
