I am having trouble figuring out where to place the hities on my trailer because of the slide out and outside closet on the side of my trailer. I am wanting to keep both horses on the same side but am worried about being too close to the slide out. I have a 3 horse 10 1/2 sw. Any suggestions on where to put them.

It will really depend on what you have each side of the trailer. You need enough space between the HiTies so the horses don't wind around each other when teethered. And they not be able to get their lead caught around a door or other object.
Here we have 3 horses on the same side. It gives you an idea of how close together.
This old trailer of mine had one right at the rear and another up forward, I had two on each side of that trailer. But I didn't have any slides.
These trailer had one on curb side because of awning and two on street side.
What ever you do make sure you attach them to a stud. Not just to the trailer skin. They WILL pull through just the skin.

both... how do they not get wrapped around the handles or do you place them far enough forward that they cannot get that close
Okay...you do need to be sure the tie is not long enough to hook under the rear door. If you follow the directions and set up your line correctly.
As for the rear door latches/handles. Here's what I do.
I took a pool noodle and cut it to size, and insert it over the door latch/handle. This keeps the lead from hooking on the latch/handle.

The picture that has 4 horses on one side was while we were tacking up. I like to tie them a little longer than that when I'm giving them some rest. For short periods when I'm watching, we tie them shorter and all on one side.
At night when comping, I tie two on each side and skip every other HiTie. So they have more room between them. I also tie the lead a little longer so they can lay down. And thats what the other pictures are showing, is horses tied so they can lay dawn or spend the night.
I camp with my horses a lot. In the summer and high country, I can usually Highline. But in the winter, our desert rides rarely have any trees to highline to. So the horses spend any time not being ridden, tied to the trailer.
I've never had a problem with the doors. I don't tie the lead long enough for them to get under or around it.
