I need to know what Im capable of pulling. Right now we have an older 16ft bumper that we get along great with but I just bought a 16 hand mare and looking for a bigger trailer.  I know I can stick with a bumper and just find a taller one but Im thinking about a gooseneck.  We only pull a couple times a month during the summer and rarely in the winter, usually a couple ponies and 2 horses, no further than maybe 60 miles one way.  I know the 5.4 can handle a good size trailer but what about the box, I believe the new supercrew only has 4ft?  Correct me if Im wrong!  We live in IA so no mountains or anything like that to worry about.  Any help would be appreciated!

I would try to pull a few different sized trailers before I bought.Just because the brochure says the truck can handle so much weight is not always the truth.

case in point.... I learned the hard way when I bought a (pos) 2008 F450 HD that is suppose to handle 26K#. It has a hard time with the small 4H that is only 6K#! In fact, it has been in the shop all week, again! Every trailer towing trip with it has an issue. So, here I sit with a big ass LQ trailer that is under the weight limit of my Ford, but scared to be out on a roadtrip with horses! Thank goodness I have the Sportchassis!

Ive been trying to find something online, thanks for that.  My problem with trying one out is I dont want to put a 5th wheel hitch in if its not going to work but I guess I may have to!  I appreciate your help.

I think you will be hard-pressed to find a gooseneck trailer light enough to haul everything you want to haul and still be within the towing capacities of your truck.  The Ford towing guide spells it out pretty well.  Find out the weight of the trailers you would consider, add the weight of your horses/ponies/tack/feed etc..  You are going to hit that +/- 8000 lb gooseneck/5th wheel towing capacity pretty quickly.
