We just got our first LQ trailer and noticed that the inspection has expired.  Where do you take a trailer to get inspected?

INSPECTION??? Or tags? Being from Texas I have never had to have a trailer inspected.

However,if it is the tags you are talking about, go to your local tax office (same place you buy your tags for your vehicle) along with the tag number or lic. reciept and buy new ones.

I have gotten new tags for it.  But under the nose there is a Texas inspection sticker with punch out holes.  It says it expires 2/09.

I would try an over the road truck shop, an RV shop, on any official Texas inspection station. We got a guy here in our area that does inspections to pretty much any and everything. That's all his shop does.

Don't know about Texas, but fall, 2008 in North Carolina, if you don't get an annual "Motor Vehicle Saftey Inspection" on your trailer, you won't be able to renew your trailer tags.

No inspection. No plates..... I got five that needs doing now!!

Farm trailer plates in Texas are exempt from inspections. Trailers less than 4,500 GVWR are exempt. All other trailers must be inspected.

The only time I've ever had to have a trailer inspected was when we were moving back to Tx.  They came out to the truck/trailer to verify the vin to get a Tx title.  That's it.

I appreciate the replies.  I saw it on there and wasn't sure what to do.  I have never had to have any of our trailers inspected either.  The trailer does have farm tags on it.

Thanks again

Guess that is why I never heard of the inspection, because every trailer I own now has FARM TAGS!

On the other hand my sister in law has a 18' car trailer with regular tags and it has NO inspection sticker on it, so I called the tax office and TxDOT and was told that the trailer inspection was for commercial vehicles or vehicles being used for hire.

In December I bought a horse trailer with lq's (off of here actually http://www.horsetrailerworld.com/home/trailerdetail.asp?ID=180695) and went to PA to pick it up. Brought it back to Texas to tag it and do the rest of the paperwork at the bank. The bank called me and said that she was told by the tax office that I had to have it inspected before I could get tags on it. One of my riding buddies works at the tax office in my hometown, so I went up and talked to her about it to see what the scoop was. (and took all the paperwork to get tags from her because I was under the impression that I did not have to have it inspected in Texas, with farm tags) Found out a couple of things. When the trailer is from out of state, they want it inspected. It did not matter that it was going to have farm tags on it. I will have to register it every year. All trailers are suppose to be inspected. This includes fifth wheels and travel trailers. She thought I might even end up having to weigh it too, but, that has not happened as yet. Also, she told me that it can be inspected most anywhere that does vehicle tags, so I called my local guy that does all my vehicles and sure enough, they do it. I drove up, the guy came out, checked to make sure the lights worked and it was connected safely (safety chains in place, etc.) blinkers, brakes, tires and that the title info matched the trailer (to prevent thefts I would guess) and put me a sticker on it. The sticker cost $5 more than regular inspection since they had to fill out a form for me to take back to the tax office and it went to the state with my tag registration. I do not know if that cost will be there next time it is inspected or not. Mainly it was to make sure that the trailer was road worthy. Was easy to do and not a problem at all. Oh, and showed my insurance on it too. ok - so how do you make it do paragraphs?????

I know if buy a trailer out of state and transfer it in Texas you have to get a weight ticket for it unless you have the MSO for it. But all the years in the car buisness I have never heard of or had to get an inspection for a trailer other than ones that are commerical (DOT) trailers. My mother has worked for the Tarrant County Tax office for 20 some odd years I will call her tomorrow and find out for sure.

From what my friend at the tax office told me.. we are suppose to be inspecting them, most people do not do it or even know about it. I wonder why? I sure didn't. We just sold our 5er last month and after having it for 4 years and tagging it each year (not farm tags of course) we never had it inspected. Before that we had a travel trailer for several years and never had it inspected either, but had it tagged each year. I do not know the rules of inspecting them, I do know it was easy and didn't cost but a little more than a regular inspection. $15.50 was the cost.
