The AVMA has an Unwanted Horse Coalition, with a website at:

http://www.unwantedhorsecoalition.org/

I saw today in the AVMA Journal an article about them and that they are conducting a nationwide survey as a first step to study the problem of unwanted horses. Under their issues link, there is a link to a the survey. Everyone with an interest in the welfare of horses is encouraged to respond at:

I found that survey yesterday on "the other side" (roping) and took it. Interesting questions but a lot of the solutions they proposed were further legislation or expanded government control. I don't see where making a law is going to solve much. If that's all it took, no one would be murdering anyone anymore because it's illegal, right?

I had to put a geriatric horse put down a couple of years ago. It is illegal in my state to bury them; there are no rendering plants. Now what do you suppose a person is supposed to do. That situation was the result of legislation. So I would have liked to have seen a few more choices but overall this was a good survey and I would encourage everyone to take it.

I just took the survey, some of the question were not about horse but about politics and how the government could help that is a bad idea

FYI: thought I would mention that the American Horse Council is a proponent of the NAIDS.
