YB ..I for one, am glad you asked. Since we share the road together, I hope your brakes work well. I made the aquaintance of a very nice rider a few years ago. She didn't know about a brake controller either. She thought since the trailer's brake lights came on she had trailer brakes... well she had brakes but they were only along for the ride.
Unless you have a trailer with "surge" or "inertia" brakes like a boat trailer or a Brenderup, your trailer has electric brakes. It relies on an electro magnet to mechanically activate the brake on each wheel. So you need a brake controller in your truck to send electric power to the trailer brakes when you want to brake.
There are several different types and brands of controllers available.. but that's an other question...

Keiferbuilt has also started making a 2H GN specifically designed for 1/2 ton trucks. When I was looking for a new trailer, it was listed in their brochures as "New Design" but I do not see it listed on their web site.
