I just got a new truck that has the brake controller that came with the truck. I don't understand the controller. What is brake gain and output? I have 2 apparent things I can control, the gain and the output. What is gain and what is output? Before I had only one control and it did not read out any numbers. This new one does and I am wondering what it actually means.

Is this a factory brake control or aftermarket under dash unit?  Mine an aftermarket unit and has a gain adjustment and shows numbers when I hit the brake to let me know how much the control is putting out... On my horse trailer I adjust it to 3.8 but when I haul my hay trailer I turn it up to around 4.4 or so.  I am guessing if yours is a factory control the gain is going to be like mine and the output reading will show how much brake is being applied when you hit the foot brake.

It is a factory brake controller on a 2013 Chevy 2500. I think you can control both the gain and the output? I was wondering which one did what and how they should be adjusted.

You control the gain, and it tells you what the output is.

Thanks, now one last question. How come I have 2 control "buttons". One I can increase with  a button (the gain i believe) and it goes up in increments,  the other "button" is a slide type button which you squeeze over left or right and it has a  mark that is like a lesser arrow, one higher.

Do new trucks not come with Owner's Manuals anymore?

Horsey1, new trucks come with a manuel if you can interpret it which in my case, nobody could, hence the reason for asking on this forum. Kind of like a man asking for directions, they don't!

Re: the brake control - I just purchased a 2013 GMC 2500HD. Sounds like my brake controller. If I remember correctly the one button changes the amount of braking power so to speak. The slide is to be used for applying the trailer brakes without using the truck brakes.
