The state changed the rules last year. Effective September 1, 2008

SECTION 1. G.S. 20-7(a)(3) reads as rewritten:
"(3) Class C. – A Class C license authorizes the holder to drive any of the
following:
a. A Class C motor vehicle that is not a commercial motor vehicle.
b. When operated by a volunteer member of a fire department, a
rescue squad, or an emergency medical service (EMS) in the
performance of duty, a Class A or Class B fire-fighting, rescue,
or EMS motor vehicle or a combination of these vehicles.
c. A combination of noncommercial motor vehicles that have a
GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds but less than 26,001
pounds. This sub-subdivision does not apply to a Class C
license holder less than 18 years of age."

Paragraph c. allows a regular license to tow a horse trailer more than 10,000 pounds.  A class "A" license is no longer required.

It has been confirmed to me that the new "C" driver's license has wording that allows combined GVWR to 26,000 pounds.  The NC DMV has not updated their web site as of today.

WOO  Hoo !

Thanks Hosspuller... Now I can "legally" pull one of my trailers, rather than none.

Anybody that has gotten a ticket for having only a class "C" when pulling a 10,000+ trailer since Sept 1 2008 can fight it and win too.  Likely pointing out the new law to the DA will suffice.  No need to wait for a court date.
