I live in IN and am thinking about buying a trailer with no title. The owner will give us a bill of sale. Wondering how hard it will be to title, since KY residents don't have to title trailers and IN residents do. Couldn't find anything on the DMV website.

I live in Kentucky, and I have sold several trailers to folks in states that require a title. You will have to get your trailer inspected(usually the Sheriff) to verify the VIN# matches the Bill of Sale. Then Indiana will issue a new title for the trailer. I have never heard of a problem getting this done.

Have you asked the seller what happened to the original title,or,did they ever title it themselves?
We ran into this in my state and spent all summer dealing with a childhood "friend" trying to obtain a title.In Arkansas,they don't deal with those open titles any longer.You were,at one time,able to have a "homemade" title issued,but,we did not want that.We were not 100% positive that some buddy of his didn't have a claim on the title,either,even tho we had a legal lien search done by an attorney that didn't show up any legally recorded loans.
We passed in favor of a much better deal,WITH a title.Just our experience and thought I'd pass it on.

Call or e-mail your DMV (if that's an option for you) and ASK FIRST. I found out that VA will NOT accept a Bill of Sale. I asked first, so I did not buy. I currently have a trailer, titled in VA, that at some point had a "lost" title and it was titled as homemade. I dfo not know what the process is to get that. It is, obviously, not homemade, as you can see where the manufacturer's tag was removed. Determine if this is a headache worth taking on BEFORE you buy.

Oklahoma is also a non-title state, so we deal with the no title situation a lot. If KY is the same as OK, the seller can apply for a KY title and have it in hand before you purchase the trailer from them. Then they will have to be the ones to have the VIN inspection done and save you that process.

Same deal here in Ky, absolutley not an issue to get a title on a trailer if it's needed. It surely wouldn't stop me from buying one if it was priced right.

I can have a title for any trailer in 24 hours here in Kentucky, the state offers a service called a speed title, cost $15 extra I think to have the title in 24 hours. So just point me to any real bargains you find out there without a title, train cars excluded.
