We have slide out steps on our trailer and have problems with them sticking from sand and stones when driving on gravel roads.

I was thinking of hanging a rubber mud flap in front of the step. I would likely attach the mud flap from one of the webs from the plank flooring, but I need to get under the trailer to have a better look at mounting options.

Has anyone been successful doing this? Or is there a better way to prevent a slide out step from sticking?

Regards, 3CW

I had same problem so I just used some WD-40 and sprayed the rails real good and that solved my problem. I do it about twice a year or so.

It is not the roller / rails which are sticking but an accumlation of gravel and sands preventing the step from being pulled out. I was hoping to block the gravel from landing on top of the stair with a rubber mud flap unless someone has a better solution. Regards, 3CW

Use Fluid Film instead of WD-40(it's only for water displacement)... http://www.fluid-film.com FLUID FILM products are solvent free and consist of an all natural lanolin base, which contain less than 1% VOC in their bulk form. Remaining solvent free since the original formulation in 1943, the FLUID FILM product line is made of the highest quality corrosion preventives and lubricants available on the market today. FLUID FILM, when used on cutting devices, will not burn greenery.

we had the same problem and I took a piece of flexible rubber the width of the step and hung it in front and also behind, I used self tapping screws that were about an inch long to attach it, our trailer had about a 3/4 wood sub floor over aluminum so there was no problem doing this, never have had another rock in the step.

Kooner - Thanks, it sounds like the rubber is good solution. Trying to open those slide out steps is a PITA after driving down a gravel road. Regards, 3CW

I had a similar problem. I used rubber to solve it. However, I saw that some guys have already recommended this method. It really works.
In general, I always have some difficulties with the stairs, heh. Recently, a couple of steps that led to the backyard of the house broke down. I've never built steps myself, so I didn't even know where to start. Only the article helped, which explained in detail how to build steps from paving stones. Still, it's amazing that nowadays you can find any information on the Internet.
