| Last night my trailer was rear ended at a stop light by a semi. The driver hit it going about 45mph which was quite an impact. When the it was all said and done the semi driver got out of his truck and said he was loaded with 40,000 lbs of truck and steel piping. He could not believe this was all the damage he did to my trailer. You can see that he bent the anti rack hardware on the door, and his mirror that was mounted on the fender broke off and hit the skin but that was all the damage that was done. This is why everyone says these trailers are the toughest. The semi was not in the best of condition after hitting this tank! |

| I believe he lied to you. 45 mph with a semi loaded with steel pipe would have not only knocked the crap out of the back of your trailer but out of you,also. I have personally seen a "top of the line" (i.e. more expensive also) trailer that was rearended by a semi NOT going 45mph but about 25.The back doors were unable to be opened. PS glad you didn't get the crap knocked out of you,tho.

Location: West TN | I worked in insurance claims for five years and looked at several vehicles involved in collisions. If he was traveling at that rate of speed and hit you while you were at a dead stop while you were holding your brakes, then you would have alot more damage than that. If that is the case, I would start looking for structural damage as well. If he was hauling 40000lbs... that does not even take into account the weight of the truck. An impact like that would have collapsed the end of the trailer. I have rarely seen cases where a vehicle or anything that was involved with a semi did not come out on the losing end.

Any damage to the hitch in the tow vehicle? What was the make and model of the semi? Was it a cab-over or conventional cab? Seems like I'm missing something or some part of this story........45 mph??? |

Location: western PA | Holly A semi tractor trailer striking another stopped vehicle while traveling at 45 mph would have completely crushed it, and driven it almost a hundred yards past the accident scene. Your trailer's body and rear doors would have been crushed well past the wheels. The goose hitch would in all probability, been sheared off, or at the very least completely bent forward into the bed. Recently, videos were shown on TV about bumper tests of vans involving collisions at 5 mph. The AVERAGE damage exceeded $4000, involving bumpers, tail gates and structural supports. The impact was caused by a vertical post anchored to the cement. I've done more damage to my trailer than yours has received, when I backed it into the step ladder I left behind when washing the back doors. We have an extraordinary amount of talent in this forum, and they are most generous with their information. Location: Western WA | I would hate for anyone new to the forum and/or new to pulling horse trailers to review this thread and think there is any way any trailer, regardless of brand, would withstand being rear-ended by a loaded semi at 45 mph and come out looking like the pictures shared by the OP. The bumper of the semi would have impacted the trailer about midway up the rear doors and there is absolutely nothing on the rear of a horse trailer to buffer/absorb the impact, like a bumper-to-bumper automobile crash would. I'm not a structural engineer and I don't design horse trailers for a living, but I really doubt the frames of horse trailers are designed to withstand that kind of impact with no damage, much less the skin which has no impact resistant value whatsoever. IMHO, there is no sign of impact to match the OP's story. |

Of course, the "semi" would have had to have been a low rider Nerf truck (or possibly a plastic Tonka). I think the semi driver was probably Bob the Builder who was actually hauling 45 Leggos. Location: Central Arkansas | Hey Vaquero, are you referring to me? just curious as I own two 4 stars and a Bloomer, no Sundowners. Even though I think 4 Starsare built well, but come on 45mph with pretty much no damage. There are some missing facts for sure. Maybe the truck was going 45mph BEFORE it hit it's brakes causing it to almost come to a complete stop immediately before rolling into the back of the trailer in the original post. I did not fall off the watermelon truck, I climbed in to sip the watermelon flavored shine!
