I have a 2000 sundowner gooseneck (aluminum) and I need to replace the seal that runs along the whole roof. I started picking at it using a square head razor blade and man its going to take me foreverrrr. Has anyone done this, used a different magical tool? some kind of caulking thinner, something to make it peel up easier?
next question... has any one just gone over the caulking with new caulking?? the recommended caulking is a 3M 540 marine grade. I have only gotten a few feet cleaned off and its been hell. Looking for a quicker/ easier solution.

I have a 2000 Sundowner. I've replaced the caulking twice. But won't again.
The best way to remove the old caulk is a wire cup brush in a angle grinder. It quickly abrades the caulk and leaves a bright bare metal surface.
Caulking the seams... After 5 years, the original OEM caulk was leaking. I removed it and recaulked with Sikaflex from Sundowner. After 5 years, it was leaking again. 8 years ago I replaced the caulk with Eternabond tape. I haven't had a leak since. (And it was easier to apply. neater looking too.) I did use a roller to press the tape on. Hand pressure is not enough to insure a good bond and seal.
